Romance Author Stella May Asks, What’s in a Name?

By Stella May

Have you ever wondered if or how a person’s name affects his/her personality? Does your name determine your fate? Or was Shakespeare right to shrug off labels? The older I get, the more I am convinced that the Bard was wrong—that there is something in a name, after all.

My great-grandmother was named Tatyana. There are several different meanings of that name. From ancient Greek, it translates as “founder of order” or “organizer.” According to other translations, it means “a fairy queen,” or “fairy princess.” She was both. Born to a noble Russian family, she was raised like a princess. Later in life, by fate’s capricious will, she became head of the household, where she reigned supreme, bringing order and organizing the lives of her family.

Let’s start from the beginning: Tatyana Fortushina was born in 1901 in Qusar (Kusary), located in the foothills of the Great Caucasus Mountains in Azerbaijan. One of her brothers was an orthodox priest. The other was in the army. She also had two sisters.

Unfortunately, the details about my great-grandmother’s family are sketchy at best. According to all the people I have talked to, Tatyana (or Baba Tanya, as everybody called her) wasn’t close with her parents or siblings. My guess? Probably because of her highly unusual marriage. As I said, my great-grandmother was raised and educated like a princess, graduating from an establishment (St. Nina’s) for girls of prominent Christian families, and was the apple of her parents’ eye…. until she met my great-grandfather, that is.

Here, we draw a big, fat blank. To this day, no one in the family knows how or why Meshady Abbas, the son of an Iranian manufacturer, ended up in post-revolutionary Azerbaijan.

When did my great-grandparents meet? And how on earth did a Muslim merchant get parental permission from one of the prominent members of Christian society to marry his daughter? The details are shrouded in secret. One thing we know for sure, though, is that in order to marry my great-grandmother, my great-grandfather converted to Christianity. And so, Meshadi Abbas became Artemy Kurdov and married my great-grandmother. Vera, my grandmother, was born the next year.

Their small family was happy—at least I want to believe that they were—but not for very long. When my grandmother Vera was a toddler, Artemy Kurdov, who embraced the Communist ideology wholeheartedly, was executed as an enemy of the nation. Ironic? Not in the least. It’s hard to understand now, but, during Stalin’s regime, just sneezing the wrong way was enough to be labeled as an enemy of the state—literally.  And my daredevil of a great-grandfather had managed to become something of a Major in the small city where he lived.  I assume that’s why he was ultimately executed… or perhaps he just said something, or did something, or looked at someone in passing, and some zealot took a notice and reported it. I don’t want to think about my great-grandfather’s days in prison or the beatings he endured. Torture was a regular practice of the NKVD—the original name of the KGB.

Thus, my great-grandmother Tatyana was left a young widow with no income to support her and her daughter, and no family to turn to for help. But instead of falling apart, this delicately built dark-haired princess squared her shoulders and spat fate in the eyes. She showed everybody what a graduate of St. Nina’s was made of! Remembering the sewing lessons she took in school, Baba Tanya soon became one of the most sought-after seamstresses—all the wives of the city’s elite were dressed by her. Much later, her granddaughters, my mom and my aunt, paraded in the clothes that were the subject of envy to their friends.  She had finally found her footing, and life in her household became content. They had a roof over their heads, food on the table, but, most importantly, they had each other.

And then…

Her only daughter, her whole world, the reason of her being, fell in love with a man almost twice her age… and had to get married, or else. I can only wonder what Baba Tanya felt, when her nice and quiet world suddenly fell apart, as her own daughter repeated the same fate she had? As a mother, how would I react if I were in her shoes? Would I let my daughter chose her own fate, or would I try to interfere? I honestly don’t know.

In the end, my great-grandmother gave the couple her blessings and stepped aside. For the next five years, she lived alone. Was she hurt? I imagine she was. Feeling lonely? Abandoned? Oh, absolutely. But she was too proud to show her emotions. Always restrained, now she became coolly aloof.

Years later, when her beloved daughter became a widow with two small children at the age of twenty, she immediately took all of them under her wing. How could a woman, a mother, and grandmother keep harboring grudges when three people she loved more than life itself needed her? Hence, she became the head of an all-female household, one she ruled for almost three decades. The second meaning of her name – the founder of order—had come into play.

According to my family, she was a stern woman, fair and loving, but reserved. She didn’t suffer fools, didn’t forgive easily, and meted out punishment with a precision of a surgeon. Her scalpel was her tongue—sharp, cold, and merciless. But her love for her girls, although never visible, ran deep and was true.

My grandmother Vera always said that, if not for Baba Tanya and her sacrifices, they probably wouldn’t have survived the hunger of World War II. During that horrible time, to suppress her own hunger, Baba Tanya started to smoke. She went hungry for days, giving her tiny bread portions to her granddaughters. She learned to cook from bran and waste products, conjuring meals out of things unimaginable. She stood hours on end in bread lines, barely alive from hunger, all the while puffing away her disgusting handmade cigarettes. That cheap tobacco mix affected her lungs, ultimately causing her to pass away years later when I was barely three years old.

My memory of her is vague: a frail figure in a starched white kerchief, thin and pale-faced, coughing loudly. I remember I was afraid to enter the room when the ‘scary old woman’ was lying in bed. I suppose, for a small child, her frailty, her illness-ravished face, that horrible dry cough could and did look scary.

But still…to this day, I feel ashamed of myself.

Interestingly enough, while I don’t remember much of my great-grandmother’s face, one thing that stuck with me is her hands, which I can remember clearly.

Isn’t that just strange?

Or is it just the wonders of human memory?

Here is a peek at Stella’s time travel romance novel for your reading pleasure.

One key unlocks the love of a lifetime…but could also break her heart.

Nika Morris’s sixth sense has helped build a successful business, lovingly restoring and reselling historic homes on Florida’s Amelia Island. But there’s one forlorn, neglected relic that’s pulled at her from the moment she saw it. The century-old Coleman house.

Quite unexpectedly, the house is handed to her on a silver platter—along with a mysterious letter, postmarked 1909, yet addressed personally to Nika. Its cryptic message: Find the key. You know where it is. Hurry, for goodness sake!

The message triggers an irresistible drive to find that key. When she does, one twist in an old grandfather clock throws her back in time, straight into the arms of deliciously, devilishly handsome Elijah Coleman.

Swept up in a journey of a lifetime, Nika finds herself falling in love with Eli—and with the family and friends that inhabit a time not even her vivid imagination could have conjured. But in one desperate moment of homesickness, she makes a decision that will not only alter the course of more than one life, but break her heart.

Unleash Your Fantasy✨

How to Channel Your Favorite Fantasy Characters

Which fictional character resonates with you the most? As a young adult author, I’m always inspired by strong, spirited females who are on a journey of self-discovery like Sophie Goodchild in my debut novel, Disenchanted. Perhaps for you, it is the resourceful and determined Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, or the charismatic and powerful Simon Lewis from The Mortal Instruments. Who inspires you?

Consider the values and traits that make them special. Is your favorite character brave and selfless like Tris Prior of the Divergent series, intelligent and resourceful like Hermione Granger of the Harry Potter series, or confident and charismatic like Magnus Bane of the Mortal Instruments series? To channel your magical character, incorporate their positive habits and practices into your day that reflect their magical world, such as visualizing your goals, meditating, or learning a new language.

To unleash your fantasy alter ego, you can transform your living space into an enchanted sanctuary that both reflects your personality and inspires your imagination, such as creating a cozy reading nook filled with your favorite fantasy novels (and maybe some new ones!) and comfy pillows. Indulge in spreading the magic. You can host fun gatherings like fantasy movie nights, card game nights, and DIY craft sessions where you and your friends make fun potions or dream catchers.

Before you know it, you’ll be living like your favorite fictional character. Have fun, stay true to yourself, and always keep a touch of magic in your life!

The Magic of the YA Love Triangle

Few things ignite a YA fandom like a love triangle and since Valentine’s Day is near, let’s delve into the hot topic. Whether it’s Peeta vs. Gale, Edward vs. Jacob, or my personal fave, Hayden vs. Parker (in my novel, Koush Hollow) readers love taking sides. But why do we get so invested in these fictional relationships?

Love triangles thrive on tension. One love interest represents the safe choice, the other excitement and danger. One is the best friend who’s always been there, the other is the mysterious newcomer. The best triangles force characters and readers to question what they truly want in love.

A well-written love triangle isn’t just about romance; it’s about identity. Who will the protagonist become? Their choice isn’t just about who to kiss, it’s about who they see themselves with in the future. That’s what keeps readers turning pages (and debating furiously in the comments section).

So why do we, as readers, feel the need to choose a side? First, there’s the emotional Investment. We see ourselves in certain characters, and their happiness feels personal. If we identify with the quiet, loyal best friend, we’re rooting for them. If we love a little danger and unpredictability, we’re all in on the brooding bad boy.

Then there’s the thrill of the chase. The slow burn, the stolen glances, the will-they-won’t-they dynamic that fuel our attachment.

Let’s not forget the tropes. Some readers live for the friends-to-lovers trope, while others crave the enemies-to-lovers dynamic (my personal favorite). Love triangles let us pit these classic arcs against each other.

So let me know your thoughts in the comments. Are love triangles an exciting source of drama or an overused trope? Have you ever changed teams midway through a book? And most importantly, which YA love triangle still haunts you? If you’re looking for a new love triangle, I’m including a link so you can head to the mystical Bayou in KOUSH HOLLOW and cheer on #TeamHayden or #TeamParker!

Magical Gifts That Cast a Spell✨

by Leigh Goff

Searching for the perfect Christmas gift to empower girls?

As the holiday season approaches, finding the perfect gift for the special girls in your life can be a daunting task. You want something that inspires, empowers, and sparks imagination. Look no further than the young adult (YA) section of your favorite bookstore (online or on Main Street) where novels transport readers to enchanting worlds and magic is woven into everyday life. These kinds of stories not only inspire girls to tap into their imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills, but by embracing the fantastical, girls can develop a sense of wonder, curiosity, and innovation – essential qualities for navigating the complexities of the modern world.

The YA books I’ve written offer a diverse range of female characters with their own unique experiences, struggles, and triumphs. These characters are more than just protagonists – they’re role models, inspiring girls to embrace their individuality, challenge societal norms, and tap into their inner strength and courage. By reading about strong, complex female characters like the ones in my novels, girls can develop a positive self-image, build confidence, and learn to navigate the complexities of growing up. What’s more magical than that?

The Spellbinding Book Club

by Leigh Goff

selective focus photography of several people cheering wine glasses

Double, double, toil and trouble…Get your book club in the mood for magic! Here are some fun ideas on how to brew up a fun gathering for your next book club meeting.

First, you want to set the mood. Transform your meeting space into a cozy gathering spot. Dim the lighting, light scented candles, and add fairy lights. Display seasonal decor such as pumpkins and leaves for the fall (or pine boughs and berries during winter). Don’t forget soft throw blankets and pillows to make your guests extra comfortable.

Create a magical menu of potions and treats to fuel your book discussion. You can serve a variety of herbal teas or a fun cocktail like Midnight Magic Espresso Martini (recipe below). For snacks, you need magical munchies like magical mushrooms (stuffed mushrooms), witches’ fingers (veggie sticks), or moonbeam macarons.

Encourage guests to dress in witchy attire or a theme color. Invite a tarot card reader to start the evening on a mystical note. Give guests a “magic bag” filled with herbal teas, crystals, love potions (perfume samples), or patchouli scented votive candles.

After an evening of good food, delicious drinks, and lively discussion, close the meeting with a gratitude circle. Ask the group to join hands and offer appreciation for each other, the books, and the magic of friendship. What could be better?

Summon the Magic of the Witching Season

a white witch holding a broomstick

As the leaves begin to change and the air grows crisp, a sense of excitement and mystery surrounds us. The Witching Season is upon us and with it comes a world of magic, wonder, and enchantment.

It’s a season of long nights and dark skies, ideal for stargazing, moon-gazing, and connecting with the mysteries of the universe. It’s also a time of shadows, when the light of day gives way to the darkness of night and when the boundaries between reality and fantasy are blurred.

In many ancient cultures, Autumn was when the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, making it the perfect time for communicating with spirits and casting incantations. Below is an enchanting incantation to tap into your own inner magic. It’s definitely a spell one of my daring main characters would use to summon courage and strength. After all, what is a witch but a powerful woman. I’m also including a link to my books (paperback, kindle, audio) that pair bewitchingly well with the season!

✨Power of Autumn Incantation (repeat three times)

By the power of the moon so bright,
I call upon my inner strength tonight.
With crystal clear and heart so true,
I claim my power, and all I do.
I am the witch, with magic might,
I conjure power, with all my sight.
I am the goddess, with energy so bold,
I manifest my dreams, with a heart of gold.
By the power of the elements so fine,
I seal my spell, with a witch’s sign.
So mote it be, with magic so bright,
I am powerful, and all is right.

New Release for Stella May (Free Excerpt!)

Multi-published romance author Stella May is elated to announce the release of her latest novel New Life, Book Three in the Rostoff Family Saga! Here’s the blurb and an excerpt to pique your interest.

In a kingdom held together by secrets and lies, the truth could heal—or destroy.

The queen is dead. But the damage Elizabeth Rostoff leaves behind to lives, hopes, and relationships lives on.

Seven years ago, Peter Rostoff severed all ties with his family—including his sister, Kat.

But at his father’s insistence, he reluctantly returns for the funeral worn thin by his FBI position and burdened by a secret shame. But mostly by one haunting mystery—why the woman he loved like a mother disappeared…

All those years ago, Natasha Sokolova thought abandoning Dmitry Rostoff and the children she’d come to love as her own was the right thing, the only thing, to do. Resurfacing after Elizabeth’s death isn’t the healing experience she’d prayed for, but a gut-wrenching discovery of yet more secrets, and news that could destroy her for good.

Kat Rostoff lives in a bubble filled with her doting father and a mentor that helped mold her into a world-renowned artist. Yet nothing can fill the empty space, and a vague sense of guilt, left behind by the mother figure she barely remembers, and the brother who fled Paris seven years ago without looking back.

Four lives, set on diverging paths with only a glimmer of hope for reconciliation. But will the queen’s evil reach out from beyond the grave to destroy it for good?

EXCERPT

A candid snap of a teenage girl, beautiful in her budding femininity, smiling shyly in the camera. Hair of true platinum color, a rare Nordic shade, long and silky, and eyes the color of a sky before it rained. Katie… His beautiful princess, his baby sister… No, not a baby anymore. Peter sighed.

Ekaterina Rostoff, a famous artist, sculptor, celebrity.

His salvation. And curse.

Just thinking about her made his heart melt and sigh and stutter.

And burn with shame.

Peter lifted his hand, then dropped it down without touching her beautiful image. With a helpless oath, he turned away, pulled at his hair with both hands. Defeated, he dropped into a chair, and closed his eyes. As if conjured by his unruly imagination, her face swam before him. Peter fisted his hands.

Dammit.

Seeing Katie in Zolotoe Selo took a toll on him. For almost seven years, he deliberately stayed away from her, from California and his grandmother’s estate  where they grew up. If not for Elizabeth’s funeral, he would never have returned to that place.

That estate and the monstrosity of the manor house repelled and attracted him at the same time. Two days ago, as soon as he saw it again after all these years, the memories ambushed him. Bittersweet and poignant and heartbreaking.

It made him feel again like a lost little boy from so long ago.

Or just yesterday? Two decades seemed to shrink to just two days. Or even minutes. His imagination played a nasty trick, as the painfully familiar face of a young woman swam before his eyes. Red curly hair, impossibly green eyes, petite frame. And the voice, deep and velvety, like raw honey drizzled over milk. Natasha. His first adolescent crush, his best friend, his second mother.

With an effort, he banished her image from his mind, shut a lid on his memories. Eighteen years ago, Natasha vanished into a thin air after accepting a hefty check from Elizabeth. She never reappeared again.

Her betrayal still hurt. It always will. He forced himself to stop wondering where she might be, or worrying if she was alright. No point to dwell on it. He wished her well.

But dammed if he was able to forget or forgive.

Even the vivid reminder of Natasha paled in comparison with meeting Katie.

She stole his breath the very first time he saw her. Just a tiny baby, to him she seemed the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. That moment etched into his memory forever. The gazebo in his grandmother’s estate, the small cradle, and the tiny baby with a mop of a silky hair. She slept with her cherubic mouth half-open, covered in a pink blanket. And when she opened her eyes, blinked, and smiled at him, she claimed his young heart. Forever.

Almost two decades later, she still remained the most beautiful thing under the sun. And still every time she aimed her pewter eyes at Peter, his heart broke.

Katie. His princess. His greatest joy.

His worst nightmare.

Whisked Away by an Egg-cellent New Release

From Stella May

I love to cook, especially when the dish is easy, and this one is. My family enjoys these omelets for breakfast or lunch. For breakfast I add a fruit salad and toast. Lunch is when I include a small green salad, or sautéed green veggie, and a croissant to round out the meal.

Fluffy Omelet

2 eggs per person* images

1 tsp. butter

1 tbsp. olive oil

Pinch of salt

⅓ cup shredded Mozzarella or your preferred cheese

⅓ cup thinly sliced sauteed mushrooms, optional

¼ cup of chopped green bell peppers, optional

Use two bowls to separate egg whites from yolks. Add a pinch of salt to the whites then beat them with hand mixer on high speed until it forms firm peaks.

Add yolks, one at a time, and continue to beat at low speed until well blended.

Warm a skillet on medium heat, add butter and olive oil. Turn the heat to low and pour in eggs. Cover with lid and let it set 2 – 3 min.

Sprinkle on cheese.

Scatter sauteed mushrooms and bell pepper across the omelet.

Cover for another 1 min, then use a spatula to flip over half of the omelet. Turn the omelet over and cook for 1 min.

*I use large brown eggs straight out of the refrigerator.

Yes, I know the official date was September 23 this year, and I’m writing this post a little later. The official calendar date occurs on the autumnal equinox when and day and night are almost equal—in most locations. I also know that now it’s officially spring in the Southern Hemisphere. But I digress.

As you might have guessed, I don’t follow the notion that fall begins on September 22, or sometimes on September 21 or September 23, depending on the difference between the Gregorian calendar and the time it actually takes the Earth to complete its orbit around the sun. Because it takes 365 and ¼ days for the Earth’s orbit the September equinoxes shift about 6 hours later each year, eventually moving the date by a day.

So, if I don’t recognize the Equinox as the start of fall, when does it start? Fall begins for me in the grocery store, night or day, and it depends upon when I spot this beauty on the produce stand.

Yep, you see it right. Fall begins for me when I find caramel apples in the grocery. I start watching for them in early September, savoring the thought of a crisp apple covered in caramel and chopped peanuts.  They come in packs of three at my Kroger and when my daughter lived at home it was one apple for each of us.  Then when she moved out, I usually ate the third apple when the hubby was at work and then resisted getting another package and hiding it from the family. Now that Hubby’s retired I have to split the last treat. But that’s okay, because when they’re in season he always picks up an extra pack for us. Last night he brought three caramel and cinnamon streusel crusted apples home. Can you say apple pie on a stick?

I justify this sweet treat because apples and nuts in moderation are good for you. Caramel not so much. Apples are loaded with fiber and quercetin, a natural antihistamine. When eaten on a stick, or off the stick, apples are a raw food. Nuts have good MUFA fats (Mono unsaturated fat) which means the caramel apple has no saturated fats and lots of fiber. A great combo for lowering my high cholesterol. I ignore the sugar for this seasonal treat. It only happens once and year and I just eat more fiber to counter the sugar’s bad affects.

Have I made you hungry for a caramel apple yet?  Just in case, here’s a link to an easy recipe to make your own caramel apples. Enjoy, and welcome to fall!

Novice Sister Margaret doesn’t consume any caramel apples on her mission trip to Mexico, but she does eat some interesting things. Find out what in Catherine’s multi-award-winning inspirational romantic suspense, The Nun and the Narc.

Where novice Sister Margaret Mary goes, trouble follows. When she barges into a drug deal the local Mexican drug lord captures her. To escape she must depend on undercover DEA agent Jed Bond. Jed’s attitude toward her is exasperating, but when she finds herself inexplicably attracted to him, he becomes more dangerous than the men who have captured them, because he is making her doubt her decision to take her final vows. Escape back to the nunnery is imperative, but life at the convent, if she can still take her final vows, will never be the same.

Nuns shouldn’t look, talk, act, or kiss like Sister Margaret Mary O’Connor—at least that’s what Jed Bond thinks. She hampers his escape plans with her compulsiveness and compassion and in the process makes Jed question his own beliefs. After years of walling up his emotions in an attempt to become the best agent possible, Sister Margaret is crumbling Jed’s defenses and opening his heart. To lure her away from the church would be unforgivable—to lose her unbearable.
