LUCKY 13 AND THE LITERARY AGENT

“And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.”–Meister Eckhart

Lucky thirteen–my thirteenth full manuscript request for WICKED SWEET was the lucky one for me. My eyes popped when I read the email from Lauren Bittrich of Lucinda Literary in New York City. Was it real? It sure was!

After this wonderful, fabulous agent requested and read the full manuscript (YA with magical elements) in two days, she sent a glowing email. She wanted to meet with me and I cried. I literally sobbed with joy for ten minutes. My poor golden retriever didn’t know what to do with me. She sat and stared until I hugged her. Then I texted my loved ones with happy dance GIFs. After I caught my breath, I was ready. I replied back with a day and time and that worked for both of us.

The morning of our Google meeting, I was nervous, but definitely more excited. I was going to talk with someone in the literary world who had read my manuscript, loved my characters, and wanted to chat about all of that. How cool?

Lauren was great from the start. She told me about her professional background and editorial experience. She explained her vision for my book and it meshed perfectly with mine. Everything sounded great! She wanted to know what inspired WICKED SWEET, and of course I told her it was the wonderfully sassy main character (Abigail) from New England who becomes a square peg in the round hole of a small, Southern town. (There’s also a coven of cool misfits, a wicked cake seance, and a romantic kiss at Boneyard Beach.) She asked if I had any other stories I was writing. I told her a bit about another story in the works. She was thrilled because she didn’t want to represent just one book, she wanted to rep me for my career. What?!

As much as I wanted to sign with her right then, I informed her that I had to let the other agents reading the manuscript know I received an offer, and I would get back to her in ten days.

What a wait! The ten days dragged on, and I found myself wondering if the first call had really happened. It had! Once I had everything I needed to make a decision, it was an easy one. Lauren was the best. I emailed her the morning of the tenth day, just as she emailed me. Within two hours, the client agreement was signed.

I’m incredibly excited to work with her and her team at Lucinda Literary on WICKED SWEET and get it ready for submission. I wish everyone who is working on a manuscript the best of luck and look forward to reading your post on getting published.

Chocolate & Cherry Heaven

from Sharon Ledwith

A real crowd pleaser at small gatherings such as book clubs or intimate bridal and baby showers, this chocolatey, sweet treat will tempt even the most disciplined of us. If cherry is your go-to fruit that makes your mouth think you’ve swallowed a piece of heaven, then read on if you dare to concoct this sinful chunk of bliss.

CHOCOLATE CHERRY CHUNK LOAF

A bit of butter for greasing the loaf pan
1¼ cups + 1 tsp. all-purpose plain flour
¼ cup cocoa
2 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
¾ cup granulated or caster sugar
1 cup cherry yogurt 3 large eggs lightly beaten
1 tsp. vanilla ½ cup mild vegetable oil
1 cup cherries
¼ cup sweet chocolate chips
1 cup walnuts, chopped, use less if you prefer

Preheat oven to 350° F (175° C or 165° for fan ovens, Gas Mark 4).

Grease a 2 lb. (8 ½ x 4 ¼ x 2 ½ inch) loaf pan.

Remove the pits from the cherries and cut each one in half. Place cherries in a small bowl, sprinkle the 1 teaspoon flour over top and toss gently.

Sift 1¼ cups flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt into a medium bowl.

Stir in sugar, chocolate chips, and walnuts. Set dry ingredients aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together yogurt, eggs, vanilla, and oil.

Add yogurt mixture to dry ingredients. Beat with a wooden spoon until all the flour is mixed in and the batter is smooth.

Gently fold in the flour-coated cherries.

Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until cake tester inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Cool in pan for 20 minutes, then remove cake and place it on a wire rack to cool completely.

 THE GLAZE

1 cup icing sugar, confectioner’s sugar
2 tbsp. maraschino cherry juice
1 tbsp. water
Drop of pink food coloring, optional

Pour icing sugar into a bowl. Whisk in maraschino cherry juice.

Gradually whisk in water, a drop or two at a time, until a smooth, drizzle-able consistency is reached.

Whisk in food coloring, if using.

While you’re waiting on your loaf to bake and cool, how about taking a break by delving into one of my books? May I suggest a visit to Fairy Falls, or if you’re feeling really adventurous, a trip back in time with The Last Timekeepers? Whichever you choose, either series will entertain and engage, pulling you into another time and a different place.

The only witness left to testify against an unsolved crime in Fairy Falls isn’t a person…

City born and bred, Hart Stewart possesses the gift of psychometry—the psychic ability to discover facts about an event or person by touching inanimate objects associated with them. Since his mother’s death, seventeen-year-old Hart has endured homelessness, and has learned ways to keep his illiteracy under wraps. He eventually learns of a great-aunt living in Fairy Falls, and decides to leave the only life he’s ever known for an uncertain future.

Diana MacGregor lives in Fairy Falls. Her mother was a victim of a senseless murder. Only Diana’s unanswered questions and her grief keeps her going, until Hart finds her mother’s lost ring and becomes a witness to her murder.

Through Hart’s psychic power, Diana gains hope for justice. Their investigation leads them into the corrupt world threatening Fairy Falls. To secure the town’s future, Hart and Diana must join forces to uncover the shocking truth, or they risk losing the true essence of Fairy Falls forever.

BEWITCHING HANNAH–Unleashing the Magic in Annapolis

bhcoverartbevel-2
My next enchanting novel, BEWITCHING HANNAH, is on its way from Mirror World Publishing! Mirror World has a reputation for publishing fantastic fiction, and I’m thrilled to be working with them again.

The young adult fantasy, set in present-day Annapolis, Maryland (lots of scenes are set at the historic sites in my hometown), focuses on Hannah Fitzgerald, a sixteen-year-old Chesapeake witch. And even if being a witch sounds super cool, it’s the last thing she wants.

Hannah, the thirteenth great-granddaughter of the Wizard Earl Fitzgerald, has always known she was descended from a royal legacy of dark magic. Although a stranger to her coven in Annapolis, she is no stranger to grief and denial. However, when an ancient prophecy reveals the rise of a young, powerful witch and the impending death of another, she realizes she can no longer afford to suppress the magic that has taken away so much. She seeks out the frighteningly scarred, yet mysterious W, a Calvert descendant, who is destined to change her life, but even he cannot prepare her for the danger that lies ahead.

Enemies will hurt her. Loved ones will make her vulnerable. And the impending prophecy that drives her to unleash her magic will cause her to unearth the sins of the past and doubt any promise of a future. Without knowing whom her true rival is, Hannah isn’t certain she’ll survive, and if she loses, she may lose everything, including the ones she loves.

The book is available now on Amazon. If you haven’t had a chance to read my first novel, DISENCHANTED, you can find it on Amazon, BN.com, and Mirror World Publishing.

Announcement: We’re Hitting the Shelves!

Disenchanted is hitting the bookstore shelves!

Mirror World Publishing

My dream has always been to ‘one day’ walk into a major bookstore, like Chapters or Indigo, and find my book on a shelf. I didn’t know then just how much of an uphill battle that would be, but that dream set me on the path to finishing not only one novel, but several, and through the painstaking process of learning the publishing business and becoming an entrepreneur.  And, today, that dream is finally within sight.

As you know, Forbidden by Matthew Freake launched May 17th, 2015, kicking off our Summer of New Releases. The above is a photo of a shelf in the Indigo closest to our office where you can walk in and purchase Forbidden. The best part is, Forbidden is the first Mirror World book to be held in the store, but it will not be the last, soon Disenchanted by Leigh Goff will join…
